Specialists and GPs are the largest categories overall, but junior roles aren't a small side door, they're an ongoing part of how New Zealand brings overseas doctors in.

The age data backs this up. The 30–34 bracket shows up as a strong, well-represented group on MCNZ's chart, ahead of the youngest (25–29). If you're in your late 20s or early-to-mid 30s and thinking about making the move, you're sitting right in the bracket that MCNZ's numbers show is common among IMGs already here.

Who is eligible to register in New Zealand

International medical graduates now make up over 40 percent of New Zealand's practising doctors, according to MCNZ's 2025 workforce survey. But qualifying as an international graduate is only half the story. What actually decides your route in comes down to two clear tests, and which one applies depends on where you've built your experience.

If you trained in Australia, the United Kingdom or Ireland and completed your internship there, your path is a more direct one, generally requiring two years of experience after qualifying.

If you are qualified and hold three to five years' experience in the following countries, you're likely eligible to apply: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, South Korea, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Why the junior doctor pathway moves faster

Junior doctor roles typically register under General Scope, which is more standardised than the Vocational Scope pathway specialists go through. Registration applications generally take around 20 working days to process once submitted, and for doctors who don't need a visa (Australian-registered doctors, for example) the whole process from first contact to starting work can be as quick as 4 to 6 weeks. 

For doctors going through full MCNZ registration and the immigration process, it's typically 2 to 4 months, and the biggest variable in that timeline is usually how quickly you can get your documents together.
