Living and working in New Zealand
Sixteen regions, sixteen very different lives. Whether you're a GP relocating from overseas or a specialist taking a locum somewhere new, start with the place, then we'll find the role.

New Zealand has so much to offer Medical Professionals
New Zealand is about the length of the UK, with the population of Ireland. That means regions here feel further apart than the map suggests, and the difference between a central Auckland consult room and a rural West Coast practice is bigger than the two-hour flight between them.
Pick a region below to see what living and practising there actually involves, housing, schools, climate, the hospitals and roles we recruit for, and what your lifestyle could look like.
New Zealand offers a unique blend of stunning scenery, a welcoming community, and rewarding career opportunities for healthcare professionals looking to relocate.
Main centre, provincial or rural?
Main centres
Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Dunedin. Full tertiary services, specialist units, teaching and research, and the deepest job markets. Also the highest house prices and the most competition for roles.
Provincial
Tauranga, Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson, Whangārei. Base hospitals with good general services, a shorter commute, houses you can actually buy, and a broader scope of work than you'd get in a tertiary centre.
Rural
West Coast, Gisborne, Southland, the Far North, inland Otago. The widest scope of any work in the country which suits some doctors enormously and others not at all, and it pays to be honest with the experience you're looking for.
