Overview

Required Skills & Essential Qualifications

• Strong capability across general surgical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build trust with patients, wh?nau and colleagues.
• A collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary clinical teams.
• A strong commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and professional standards.
• Sound clinical judgement, prioritisation and escalation skills in a busy healthcare environment.
• Flexibility to contribute to rostered duties and on-call responsibilities as required.
• Must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Nice to Have Skills

• Experience across a broad range of general surgical procedures and presentations.
• Interest or experience in service improvement, clinical audit or teaching.
• Ability to support junior colleagues and contribute to a positive learning culture.
• Familiarity with digital clinical systems and contemporary documentation practices.
• Experience working across different clinical settings or within regional healthcare services.

Preferred Experience

• Recent experience practising as a General Surgeon in a hospital or comparable surgical service.
• Experience managing varied elective and acute surgical presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions, prioritise workload and escalate concerns appropriately.
• Experience contributing effectively to multidisciplinary meetings and shared care planning.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development through teaching, audit, quality improvement or reflective practice.

Other Requirements

• Current eligibility to work in New Zealand.
• Availability to participate in rostered, weekend and on-call duties as required.
• Successful completion of standard employment, compliance and onboarding checks.
• Commitment to maintaining accurate clinical records and meeting applicable workplace health and safety requirements.
• Ability to relocate to or work in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, if required.
