Triple0 Sponsors 482 Visas in Australia

There have recently been changes to the visas most doctors use to work in Australia, more specifically the 457 TSS Visa has been replaced by the new 482 TSS Visa. So, what does this mean? How does this affect locum doctors? What do you need to do to apply? These are all questions that will be answered in this article; see below for an overview of the new visa changes and how Triple0 can help you throughout the process.

What is the TSS Visa?

The TSS visa is a temporary visa which permits the holder to live in Australia, while working full-time for the sponsoring employer, in the nominated position. Applicants for a TSS visa may also include dependent family members in their application.

As of March 2018, the Australian Government introduced a new work visa in replacement of the 457 visa – the Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. The Government’s changes in March have been expected since their announcement in April last year, that they would be replacing the 457 visas to address Australia’s skills shortages.

The new TSS visa has 3 streams: short, medium and long-term. Most doctors who are sponsored by Triple0 will be able to work for a period of one year at a time.

Why has the 457 Visa Been Replaced with the 482?

The main reason for this change was to help fill any gaps in the Australian job market. Processing times are also expected to be greatly reduced, according to The Department of Home Affairs. A speedier process is great news for all involved.

How Does This Relate to Triple0 and Locum Work

Previously, Triple0 would assist doctors who wished to do locum work outside of their sponsored employer. Now, we have the flexibility to be the primary sponsor for a period of one year at a time. We will also continue to provide support to doctors looking for locum work outside their existing employer.

To put this into context, a doctor currently working on a 457 visa has the choice of either: A) renewing with their current sponsor under the new 482 visas once the 457 expires or B) choosing a new sponsor like Triple0 to undertake their primary work with while in Australia.

By choosing Triple0 as your sponsor on a 482 TSS Visa, you have greater flexibility to be able to work around Australia and make the most of your time Down Under.

What are the Eligibility Requirements for the Visa?

  • Must have Specialist or General Registration with AHPRA.
  • Applicants must not be inactive for 60 consecutive days.

Closing Thoughts

Working in Australia as a doctor has been made far easier with changes to the TSS visas. Shorter processing times, the flexibility and more potential sponsors open a whole new realm of possibility for doctors whilst they’re here.
